A seminar
exclusively for Principals of government-aided Sarvodaya Schools was
held at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New
Delhi on April 27, 2006 in asscoiation with United Nations Office
for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment with the objective of reaching out to a segment where
the problem of drug abuse is a serious concern
Sundeep Khanna, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment, in his address, assured the audience that the "government
is open to suggestion and criticism alike, as this will help us
improve the situation".
Gary Lewis, South Asia Representative, UNODC, pointed out that
the biggest problem in fighting drug abuse is the perception among
the youth that they do not think they are in danger.
Gautam Babbar, an expert from UNODC's Global Challenges Section,
highlighted the need to have effective drug education in school.
"HIV/AIDS is one of the serious consequences of drug abuse. This
issue therefore, needs to be immediately addressed", he said. He
stressed on the importance of interactive teaching and learning
process, which develop a child's personal and social skills.
